Video Served Three Ways – Little Berlin, Great and Terrible Collective and Rebekah Templeton

Great and Terrible Collective’s “I Got Rosacea Just for this Party” presents a completely different approach to video and display. The show, curated by Dana M. Osburn, is set in a Kensington living room where each TV has a chair in front of it so viewers can sit and watch the videos with the intensity of a Saturday morning. “Wipe Outlet” by Sarah Mooney features cartoon dinosaurs heading out to a big box store to buy a selection of wipes that range from butt wipes to anti-aging, cholesterol, and lobster wipes. My notes from watching Mooney’s next video, “Hello,” read “Clay people and a paper guy in a boat, in a nut, painting trees. Cheese on a toothbrush. We were angels.” I think that’s a pretty accurate recap.



Kristina Centore’s “Pup” shows a claymation girl begging her parents for a dog. After a mildly frightening tantrum they relent and give her a dog that proceeds to eat her. The out of tune and hostile version of Fur Elise on the soundtrack is particularly apropos for anyone forced into piano lessons at a certain age. Centore’s “Young Lives” is even more blood thirsty with two golum-like children in a fight that escalates through decapitation and dismemberment and just continues into a fade out with the boys’ skeletons still fighting and a soft voice saying “blood, blood, blood.” These vignettes perfectly mimic the Sunday cartoons that had lower production values and higher morality content than the much more loved Saturday fare. Except, of course, for their intense and remorseless outcomes.

Fruit basket upset – John Baldessari’s iPhone app lets you re-arrange a Dutch masterpiece

Jori Finkel’s story on Culture Monster tells only half the story, namely that courtesy of John Baldessari’s new iPhone app (previewable online here), you can re-arrange the 17th Century still life to suit your own fancy. What it doesn’t say is how much fun it is. Quick, go play with your food!

The free app will be at iTunes next week. The app cost $35,000 and was produced by For Your Art. The whole project is in conjunction with Baldessari’s show, Pure Beauty, at LACMA. The painting featured in the app is the 1667 oil Banquet Still Life by Dutch master, Abraham van Beyeren, which is part of LACMA’s collection. This is Baldessari’s second foray into computer-re-arrangement of art. The last time, in 2001, he used the same painting and viewers would manipulate the painting at a computer set up in the gallery. The conceptual artist has been reconfiguring human heads and bodies for quite a while in his work, which never struck me before as humorous. Maybe, given this whimsical art project, I’ll have to reconsider.

Can't Wait: Kentridge At MoMA!

This large-scale exhibition surveys nearly three decades of work by William Kentridge (b. 1955, South Africa), a remarkably versatile artist whose work combines the political with the poetic. Dealing with subjects as sobering as apartheid, colonialism, and totalitarianism, his work is often imbued with dreamy, lyrical undertones or comedic bits of self-deprecation that render his powerful messages both alluring and ambivalent. Best known for animated films based on charcoal drawings, he also works in prints, books, collage, sculpture, and the performing arts. This exhibition explores five primary themes in Kentridge’s art from the 1980s to the present, and underscores the inter­relatedness of his mediums and disciplines, particularly through a selection of works from the Museum’s collection. Included are works related to the artist’s staging and design of Dmitri Shostakovich’s The Nose, which premieres at New York’s Metropolitan Opera in March 2010.

Liu Bolin: the amazing camoflage artist

These images are in fact genuine photographs depicting the work of clever Chinese artist Liu Bolin. The Beijing based artist has exhibited his work around the world with shows in China, Paris, the United States and elsewhere. News.com.au notes that Mr Bolin is a perfectionist who can take up to ten hours to ready himself for photographs of his performances. The UK's Telegraph also reports on Mr Bolin's art, noting:
In a series of mind-boggling pictures Liu melts into any background, almost entirely invisible in front of red phone boxes, Chinese flags and even earthquake rubble.

It means people walking by while he is carrying out his performance often have no idea he is nearby until he moves away. Liu said he wanted to show how city surroundings affected people living in them and how.

He said the inspiration behind his work was a sense of not fitting in to modern society and as a silent protest against the Government's persecution of artists.
Mr Bolin generally uses assistants who help to paint him in readiness for performances.

Mercer County Artists 2010 Juried Exhibition: Dude im in this SHOW

West Windsor, N.J. - Sixty-five artists have been selected for "Mercer County Artists 2010," an annual show hosted by The Gallery at Mercer County Community College. The opening reception will be held Wednesday, Feb. 24 from 5 to 7:30 p.m.; awards will be announced at 6:15 p.m. The MCCC Gallery is located on the second floor of the Communications Building on the college's West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.

A total of 82 pieces were chosen by juror C.J. Mugavero, owner and director of The Artful Deposit fine arts gallery in historic Bordentown, NJ. Among the prizes to be awarded are the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission Purchase Awards, the Utrecht Art Supplies Best in Show Prize, and the 8th Annual West Windsor Arts Council award.

The show will run Feb. 23 through April 1. Gallery hours are: Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., 2 to 4 p.m., and 6 to 8 p.m.; Wednesdays , 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.; and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4:30 to 6 p.m. The Gallery's director/curator is Tricia Fagan.

This exhibit is co-sponsored by and supported, in part, by the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission through funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a funding partner of the National Endowment for the Arts.
